Sept. 22, 2026: Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) reported positive topline results from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled VK2735-102 maintenance study of subcutaneous VK2735, a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist, in about 180 adults with obesity.
In the 21-week induction phase, weekly VK2735 produced about 16% to 19% weight loss versus about 0% for placebo (all p<0.0001 vs baseline and placebo), with no plateau through week 21. At week 21, 98%, 90%, 65%, and 32% of treated participants achieved at least 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% weight loss, respectively, versus 13%, 0%, 0%, and 0% for placebo.
In the 12-week maintenance phase, every-other-week dosing maintained up to 97% of prior weight loss versus 61% for placebo (combined QOW p<0.0001). Monthly dosing maintained up to 90% versus 61% for placebo (combined QM p<0.0001; individual monthly regimens p=0.0016 to 0.0002). Separation from placebo was seen as early as four weeks after transition.
An exploratory cohort continuing weekly 17.5 mg reached 21.7% mean weight loss at week 33, with 22% placebo-adjusted weight loss and no plateau. GI adverse-event rates during maintenance were similar to placebo, and discontinuations were low. Viking said it plans to explore oral maintenance dosing in an upcoming part 2 study.
